This article is about an older version of DF.

A dwarf with the surgery skill is called a surgeon.

The patient must be at rest to perform surgery. If the patient is not at rest, the surgeon will cancel surgery. The patient will stop resting when he gets too hungry or thirsty.

Bugs

Surgery still has a few bugs that occasionally result in surgery never being finished. Historically, surgery was a "useless" skill that would perform no function in versions prior to 0.31.04, but many of these have been fixed. Surgery is essential for treating badly wounded dwarves and is an essential part of Dwarven Healthcare. v0.31.06
