I've confirmed the skill gain for making weapons, but I'm not sure if trap components also grant 30 skill points. -Mzbundifund 23:56, 16 November 2007 (EDT)
It might be helpful to new users if a simple example is included, it would list the materials that are required to create weapons at Metalsmith's Forge. Something along the lines of:
Anvil (to create Forge) -> Have both a Weapon/Metalsmith -> Melt Rock X -> Bar is created (I think..?) -> Weapon is created, or something along those lines. I'm not exactly sure what the process is, since I'm still very new to the game, so I'm unsure if I listed the steps correctly, but it would certainly help to clear things up. What would be the best weapon to train weaponsmithing skill with?[edit]

- Depends what you mean by "best". If the smith has a preference for a specific weapon, that will be your best bet to turn out higher-quality products, and increase created wealth more. If your military has specific needs, there's your answer. (I like to have a large reserve force of woodcutter/haulers who all carry axes, all the time.) If you are planning on melting the weapons down and recycling the metal, then we look to the RAW's - both axes and picks have the largest material size, 4 (yet are made with the same 1 bar as the size 3 weapons). That's 40% recovery, best you'll find for dwarf-built weapons. (Bolts aren't listed, but the wiki reports size 3/30% for them, same as the rest). --Albedo 23:51, 18 May 2009 (UTC)

- Giant axe blades have a material size of 5, as do menacing spikes. And they are 1-bar items. That's a better deal. I assume the experience is the same.
