Wikipedia article

This article is about an older version of DF.

Steel can be smelted at a Template:L by a Template:L with the Template:L labor activated. It is an extremely durable Template:L and is highly Template:L, worth just as much as Template:L.

Aside from Template:L, steel is the only material which can be used to build structures over Template:L. Template:Ls and Template:L made from steel are 33% stronger than equivalent Template:L objects.

The method for making steel may seem complex but it is an accurate representation of the process, and not too bad when the overall utility of the resulting material is considered.

Recipe

The recipe for steel is:

When the above items are combined at a Template:L, the product is two bars of steel; the refined coal and flux are consumed in the reaction, but the pig iron and iron are combined into steel.

Production chain

In order to make steel from scratch, the following materials are needed:

The following steps are performed to produce two steel bars from the above materials at a normal smelter:

  1. Make iron bars - 1 Template:L + 1 Template:L = 1 Template:L bar
  2. Make pig iron bars - 1 Template:L bar + 1 Template:L + 2 Template:L = 1 Template:L bar
  3. Make steel bars - 1 Template:L + 1 Template:L bar + 1 Template:L + 2 Template:L = 2 Template:L bars

At a magma smelter, however, no fuel is required, reducing coal usage significantly:

  1. Make iron bars - 1 Template:L = 1 Template:L bar
  2. Make pig iron bars - 1 Template:L bar + 1 Template:L + 1 Template:L = 1 Template:L bar
  3. Make steel bars - 1 Template:L + 1 Template:L bar + 1 Template:L + 1 Template:L = 2 Template:L bars
