Yes, I've built a LOT of roads.  That might explain the 'dabbling' on some of them.  Didn't realize road building gave masonry, probably should get that in somewhere.

Gaining experience[edit]

Are we sure it doesn't give points toward masonry? I've had 8 people with masonry building my castle, and 4 of them are dabbling. I don't think any of them have built any blocks, I have a special mason's workshop for each of my mason's. They must be getting the experience somewhere, but it's certainly not a lot.

Dwarves can get experience for masonry when building roads. It's strange. The first part of building a road requires architecture. After the architect finishes, the next job needed is "no special profession" yet seems to give experience for masonry. Have you built roads? Bouchart 15:33, 26 November 2007 (EST)

I felt the other sources of experience should be shown since bridges were cited as a source of it. Jemulov 01:10, 8 October 2008 (EDT)
The masonry skillup could simply be because the road is made of stone. Try making one out of metal and see what skill(s) go up. --Smartmo 14:47, 29 April 2009 (UTC)

Yes, I've built a LOT of roads. That might explain the 'dabbling' on some of them. Didn't realize road building gave masonry, probably should get that in somewhere.

Workshop Quality[edit]

I got bored, so I zip'd my save folder, abandoned my current fortress, and entered Legends mode to check out what's happened there so far. I found this peculiar entry: "In (date), (dwarf) constructed a masterful Magma Smelter for (group) at (fortress)." I didn't realize that workshops had qualities. Once my mason gets to legendary, I'm going to have to have him rebuild every workshop in my fortress. --RomeoFalling 04:19, 11 November 2008 (EST)

Only buildings which require architecture have quality, and I'm still not sure if it's the architecture or the masonry skill (or both) that determines it. It should be possible to find out by having a separate mason and architect make a lot of one-tile bridges or archery targets or whatever.--Maximus 12:46, 11 November 2008 (EST)
It's the building design skill that matters. I've had my architect build structures of moderate quality alone, despite having dabbling skill in carpentry. --Navian 13:08, 11 November 2008 (EST)
