A cave is a natural formation that occurs in any area, consisting of a small (one-tile) hole in the wall of a large rock mound on the surface leading to narrow winding passageways that span several Z-levels. Caves are sometimes home to named creatures. They often always? lead into Template:L.
Caves can be found by taking quests or scouting for them in Template:L. This will place them on your map.
