Getting more Barrels at embark[edit]

The old trick of using a huge assortment of meats to get bonus barrels at start seems to be changed slightly. It seems to still work, but you need to be more selective at start to do it. The trick it's one species per barrel. so cow meat, cow tripe, cow intestines, etc... are all mixable in the same barrel... but cow meat, dog meat, are two separate barrels. As for drinks it comes in batches of 5. Doctorzuber 01:42, 2 April 2010 (UTC)

Confirmed - if you take 1 each of everything you can from a racoon (heart, lungs, eyeballs, tripe, whatever) they are all put in 1 barrel (or 2 if you reach more than 10 items, which is still the limit for solid items.) If you take 1 food from each species, you get a free barrel with each.
As for booze/barrels at embark, I took 11 of each type of alcohol, and the extra 1 booze of each type seems to have disappeared - only did it once when I was looking (a LOT to look at!) - needs more research.--Albedo 06:49, 2 April 2010 (UTC)
Worked for me the next time I tried it, bonus barrel w/ all 4 boozes w/ 11, 12, 13 & 14 units of diff booze - might have been boggled at the newity of it all.--Albedo 04:47, 3 April 2010 (UTC)

Amount of material needed - difference from 40d[edit]

40d required 3 metal bars to construct one barrel, now in 0.31.03 it costs one unit either of wood or metal. Not sure about earlier versions of 0.31, but suppose there it costs one metal bar too. --Peregarrett 07:35, 15 April 2010 (UTC)
Same for Bins. --Peregarrett 07:56, 15 April 2010 (UTC)
Small bug - when ran out of material, alert says "Urist McBlackSmith cancels forge zinc barrel: Needs 3 zinc bars", but when new bar has smelted - happily forges another barrel. Dwarves are really greedy! --Peregarrett 12:12, 15 April 2010 (UTC)

Considering cloth/thread jobs report needing hundreds or thousands of units of cloth, it's likely that the bar counts for the internal hardcoded reactions haven't been updated properly - the various smelter reactions will say stuff like "Needs 300 copper bars" (for bismuth bronze) but will use the correct number of bars, since each "bar" has an internal "dimension" of 150 - presumably, a failed task to forge a zinc barrel should be saying "Needs 450 zinc bars". --Quietust 17:47, 15 April 2010 (UTC)

Capacity[edit]

Back in 40d, a single barrel would be filled with up to 100 individual units of liquid (specifically, lye or dwarven milk). While milking a bunch of animals with a limited number of available milk barrels, I was only able to get my dwarves to fill a single barrel up to 25 individual units of milk. --Quietust 02:26, 7 September 2010 (UTC)
