An ocean is an immense volume of saltwater. There are generally two or three oceans on every generated map. In Fortress mode it is not possible to embark next to an ocean, although Human caravans will still bring fish obtained from them. Similarly, coastlines cannot be visited in Adventurer mode, but food shops in Human towns will stock ocean fish for you to purchase.
