Badlands are Biomes that have soil but very little rainfall, and so have very little to offer in the way of plant life, both shrubs and trees. They can be hot, cold or indifferent, but are, well, not good.
In real life, they are areas that can experience infrequent, but intense, rainfall and are subject to severe erosion as a result.
