"Hello world."

It took me three tries to get into Dwarf Fortress, the first and second of which were me being put off by the steep learning curve and having too much Fun. I went into the third attempt with eyes open and spent over five hours reading DFWiki before even downloading the game, and haven't looked back since.

I've recently begun cataloging my most recent Fortress, Suvaslòr, "Lustroustools", on a Twitter account made specifically for this purpose. If you're a twitter user, please follow @DF_Newbie and see where this fortress leads.

Suvaslòr, "Lustroustools"

General

Map features include:

The seeds for the world, Sil Num "The Planes of Wind" are as follows:

  • [SEED:3389389538]
  • [HISTORY_SEED:1476674852]
  • [NAME_SEED:680957816]

Embark Points

I opted to go without Miners this time through, as I've found in previous fortresses that miners just create a lot of stone early that I don't need, and they're easy to train in soil.

Skills

  • Carpenter/Furnace Operator
  • Woodcutter/Herbalist
  • Mason/Mechanic
  • Thresher/Cook
  • Grower/Weaponsmith
  • Grower/Armorsmith
  • Brewer/Broker/Leader

Items

Long and short of it: 59 booze (weird numbers are for the extra barrels), a single unit of all the cheap meats plus eleven turtles (for the shells) makes 31 meat, 11 plump helmets, and enough seeds to start me off. I saved a ton by dropping both battle axes and, since I only wanted one to begin with, taking one copper bar and one charcoal instead and forging it on-site. I already had a weaponsmith and an anvil coming with me, so I saved 280 points for no loss. I brought some wood as well because I was embarking into a 6x6 that had just a few tiles that were wooded and even that was "Sparse." I didn't want to get in trouble early and be bedless. The rope is for making restraints near my entrance for war dogs. The tetrahedrite is mostly just on the hopes I get silver for training weapons. The diorite was just one stone so I could build the metalsmith's forge immediately (to do the abovementioned on-site forging).

Fortress Layout

Empty for now, placeholder for a fortress build as either screenshots or a table. I have yet to strike the earth.
