If your fort was devastated by a berserk dwarf, they are probably still on the map, ready to ambush your gatherers.

In order to reclaim a building for your dwarves to use, say a {{L|Smelter}}, you will need to reclaim all of the items that make up that {{L|workshop}}. You can do this two ways. First, you can hit  {{key|t}} and move the cursor over the building, which will show all of the items within the building. This includes the materials used to build it. Just hit  {{key|f}} on each one to reclaim those items. Alternatively, when you are reclaiming items via the Stock screen any items that are part of a building can be reclaimed there as well. However, you won't know which ones those are, so for specific workshops it's easiest if you claim each one separately.

It is also possible to designate multiple items and workshops by using {{key|d}} > {{key|b}} (>{{key|c}} claim is defaulted). This makes it easier to clean up everything and reclaim undisturbed stockpiles.

==Bugs==

*The mud normally found in cave systems is gone on reclaim. This may interfere with your farming and/or wood cutting plans (depending if you rely on the underground forests for wood).

*When reclaiming a lost fortress, soldiers will not use ANY armour or weapons assigned to them, insisting on training and fighting unarmoured and barehanded. This behaviour seems related to the [[arsenal dwarf]] position - when the fortress population becomes high enough and a dwarf is assigned to the position, soldiers will finally use the equipment they have been assigned. It seems that, when reclaiming, the game acts as if you need to have an arsenal dwarf right from the start, despite there not being any way to assign one.

This article is about an older version of DF.
Are you looking to reclaim a lost fort? You may want to look at Reclaim fortress mode.

Reclaim is the opposite of forbid. Reclaiming an item allows it to be used by your dwarves. It's needed to use items found when you reclaim a fortress or build a fort near an existing settlement, as all items are automatically forbidden when you arrive. It is also used for recovering other automatically forbidden items, such as those dropped by dead goblins.

Reclaiming objects[edit]

To reclaim individual items, press k to view the item and f to toggle its forbid status.

You may also use the reclaim designation to reclaim all forbidden items in an area by using d-b-c and tracing the designation over top of the objects with either the keyboard or mouse.

You can also go into the Stocks screen, highlight the entry for your chosen item, and press f to toggle its forbid status. This is mostly useful for forbidding and reclaiming categories of items, like locking out cheap stone during a strange mood and then reactivating it afterwards.
