Aside from the stress a needy dwarf can get from really being locked away and neglected, they also become distracted and less proficient at every task they perform when they have unmet needs. On the other side, a dwarf that has the balance of their needs satisfied will perform tasks more successfully (in addition to the positive emotions and stress reduction they get the moment a need is satisfied). Theoretically, the dwarf can go up to 150% and down as low as 50% in their effective skills, but in reality it'll be a much smaller effect either way -- it is difficult to fully satisfy every need at once (or impossible, if there are enough needs), and at the same time, needs don't become unsatisfied quickly and some are easily met. Multiple needs can also be satisifed with a single action (like "keep myself occupied" and "do someting creative").

Need to Wander[edit]

Seems like an anon added that it needs a larger embark than 1x1. Immediate check in 43.03 reveals it is fulfilled in 1x1.

E: Imported save to 44.12, also fulfilled there. Also managed to fulfill on new embark with gathering and hunting (no fish though).

!!Research!![edit]

Research needs to be done into need fulfillment. As otherwise, one might be clueless on the matter of crafting, practicing an art, or being with family. (If even possible.) 73.154.165.60 03:11, 17 December 2015 (UTC)

Abstract Thinking[edit]

Satisfied by pondering in a library.

Crafting[edit]

(r) = reaction in raws

Satisfied by cooking, gem cutting, dyeing, constructing animal trap, weaving thread into cloth, assembling instrument from parts, making rock blocks, making wooden blocks, making clay bricks (r), making steel (r), milling seeds/nuts to paste.

Unsatisfied by plant collecting, sowing seeds, smoothing, engraving, web collection, smelting ores, the 'Mill plants' job.

Note -- smelting an ore does not satisfy, but making steel does. Any reaction in the raws seems to count, even if it's missing reagents, products, or an associated skill.

See great beast[edit]

The comes from a combination of high Curiosity and Nature. Still uncertain what qualifies as 'great beast', may be any LARGE_ROAMING. Uzu Bash (talk) 17:43, 27 February 2016 (UTC)

Away from family[edit]

maybe this was recently implemented my dwarves are distracted about being away from friends and family. it would be very nice if there were links here to how to go about fixing these traits. 77.127.4.53 05:29, 21 September 2016 (UTC)

Fort mode[edit]

Do we have a list for fulfilling needs in fort mode? According to a recent FotF, wandering is tied to hunt/gather/fish jobs. Bumber (talk) 02:38, 8 March 2017 (UTC)

Creatures page[edit]

Is there any reason for this page to be in the Creatures category? The Mastrod (talk) 03:51, 27 May 2017 (UTC)

What are the penalties[edit]

Is there a page that talks about the actual effects of being distracted? If so, why is it not linked here? I would add a section on it but I came here to find out. Pyrite (talk) 19:13, 2 March 2018 (UTC)

Here's a quote from the devlog on 04/12/2015:
I also added some more information for the status of needs and in what way the relevant dwarf is being affected (either positively or negatively).
Things may have changed since 2015, but at least it's a start.--Loci (talk) 01:34, 14 January 2019 (UTC)
