Dragons are ferocious predators, which are extremely hostile and difficult to kill. In addition to bite and claw attacks, they can breathe fire over a considerable amount of tiles, which can cause things such as grass, equipment and people to ignite. When a dragon enters your area, the game will announce its presence and its name. And then eat you. Quickly.
Despite that, it is possible for relatively small groups of dwarves (even as few as 8) to take down Dragons, especially if there are high proportions of relatively well trained marksdwarves available. However, this can result in a high proportion of indirect deaths caused by the handling of burning goods and materials, unless the player is quick about forbidding items that catch fire.
