Silk thread can be gathered from the webs of a cave spider and woven into cloth at the loom. If your fortress doesn't have cave spiders, then it is easy to buy silk cloth from the dwarven caravan.
Silk cloth is a little more expensive than plant fiber cloth, but it is good to keep both types around in case of a strange mood.
Giant cave spider silk is very expensive, due to the hazards involved. It's also rare because it only occurs in biomes where a lair can exist (mountains/volcanos).
Phantom spider silk is also expensive, mostly because of it's rarity. It usually occurs in terrifying heavily wooded areas of some kind, and in small patches.
