From time to time your fort will be visited by many types of civilized creatures. Some come for Trading, some for Diplomacy, and some to stay forever.
It's also possible to be visited by single dwarves and non-dwarves or groups of them from outside of your fort, gathering at Taverns for drinking and Entertainment. Some may also come for Knowledge and visit your Libraries.
