| This article is about an older version of DF. |
Forbidden objects will usually not be picked up or used by dwarves, though there seem to be some exceptions.
Forbidden objects are surrounded by braces -- { } -- to signify that they are forbidden. (In-game, these braces can be difficult to distinguish from parentheses, which are used to signify that the object was manufactured outside the fortress.)
The only way an object can become forbidden is to abandon your fortress and subsequently reclaim it - in later versions (and using certain utilities), it is possible to forbid specific items at any point.
The opposite of forbid is reclaim, which removes the forbidden status of items.
Due to the inability to freely forbid items like in the later versions, death spirals would sometimes occur; A dwarf's death would lead to many more as they all rushed to take the dead dwarf's items, only to be killed in the process, repeating the cycle until either the fortress runs out of dwarves, the invaders(be it goblins, the king of beasts, or who knows what else) get bored and leave, or you manage to close the doors to where the spiral is occuring. If a dead monarch butterfly is stuck in the doorway, Armok help you.
