Administrator Candidacy Questionnaire

Why would I be a good Administrator?

So hi! My name is Emily.

I think perhaps the most important reason would be that I love Dwarf Fortress, and it's basically the only game I ever play anymore.

As for other reasons:

  1. I am very familiar with the mediawiki software and wiki syntax.
  2. I like doing rather tedious things, like complicated parser function templates, and things that generally just make a wiki easier to use and appear nicer.
  3. I am a nice person -- most of the time.

Often times for testing purposes of the more tedious things it's necessary (or at the very least very helpful) to do some admin actions like page deletion. That definitely makes testing much easier. So I suppose my basic argument here is that there is a reason that the admin powers would be useful for me, I am knowledgeable about the wiki software, and this site isn't high-volume enough in terms of edits that any malicious admin actions on my part would go unnoticed. So I don't think there's much to worry about there. I am aware that this is a new account, but I'm hoping that there won't be as much of the silly bureaucracy that exists at enwiki here on this wiki -- afterall that's the reason I decided to join in on this wiki, enwiki's political stuff was really bugging me.

Now as for supporting evidence, there's not a whole lot on-wiki.

Supporting Evidence

  • This is my Wikipedia userpage right here.
  • I did a ton of work on the Article Version template.
  • I also got involved in the discussion about how we'll be versioning pages, and several of my ideas seem to have worked their way in: like the more automatic av template, or the "dynamic redirects" that should make the whole process easier the next time a major version comes around.
  • Also EmiBot. She is the bot I run, she does lots of tedious things like making sure all the 40d: articles have the article version template.

Public Q&A

  • Q: What is your opinion on the Wiki entry for Scamps? --MathFox 12:41, 20 March 2010 (UTC)
  • A: I assume you mean whether I think such things belong on a Wiki. I'm of the type that likes humor in a wiki, as long as it does not interfere with the purpose of the wiki -- that is, to provide information. The article about cute little Scamps doesn't interfere with this objective. That said, humor does not belong in the body of an informative article. Though I do think that the Scamps article might be better placed at something like DF: Scamps, rather than in the mainspace. Emi 04:56, 23 March 2010 (UTC)
  • For example, pages like 40d:Carp could potentially be confusing to new players trying to find information about carp. It is not particularly obvious what may or may not fall under the "don't believe everything you read" rule in the D for Dwarf banner. Emi 05:04, 23 March 2010 (UTC)
  • The "Vicious Carp" is older than 40d and I think the 40d:Carp page should be split in "useful information for 40d" and "horror stories from the past" (Cross linked, off course.) May do it myself if I have time this week. --MathFox 19:11, 23 March 2010 (UTC)
Carp are still extremely vicious in 40d. Though I think that an information page in the wiki isn't really the place for multiple stories. Maybe just one story, if told in a manner that illustrates the information in the rest of the page is appropriate. Emi 20:19, 23 March 2010 (UTC)

Support

  1. STRONG SUPPORT: We don't have many active editors who command the more arcane aspects of mediawiki. Emi is clearly such a person. VengefulDonut 14:51, 20 March 2010 (UTC)
  2. STRONG SUPPORT: Emi, you seem like a very knowledgeable gal, and one that's definitely worthy of adminship. A shining example of a Wiki-er, I'd say. --Aescula 00:08, 31 March 2010 (UTC)
  3. STRONG SUPPORT: I don't personally know any of the candidates, but one look at your page and qualifications and you certainly have my vote. Doctorzuber 04:41, 1 April 2010 (UTC)
  4. SUPPORT: Your contributions and help in getting the wiki ready for the big DF2010 changes have been invaluable, and I have every reason to believe that you would be a helpful member of the administration team. --Briess 20:44, 2 April 2010 (UTC)

Oppose

Neutral

  1. NEUTRAL: I have not seen anything that shows an interest of Emi in Dwarf Fortress or this particular Wiki. --MathFox 12:39, 20 March 2010 (UTC)
Still think there's a lack of personal involvement with "the game"; Emi shows sufficient wisdom to be an admin (but why on the wiki here?) --MathFox 12:57, 24 March 2010 (UTC)
There's a couple reasons, the first is that Dwarf Fortress is alone with Chrome and Gtalk as shortcuts on my taskbar. The second is that I grew tired of Wikipedia and it's needless bureaucracy and was hoping that the wiki regarding my favorite game (which is an astounding wiki already) would not be the same way. Partly convinced but still reserved, changed position to Neutral --MathFox 17:02, 28 March 2010 (UTC)
