Merpersons (mermaids and mermen) are little humanoids living in oceans. Usually your dwarves don't encounter them, but occasionally, when building a fort on an island they might show up. They occasionally equip stuff, but they don't steal it.
A study is currently under way to determine the feasibility of merpeople breeding/livestock programs, due to the extreme value of merperson bones.
