Adamantine is by far the most rare and valuable metal in the game. It can only be found in small amounts in mountainous areas. Care should be taken if it is found, since digging down several levels through it will lead you to the demon pits. After you reach the pits, a horde of demons will eventually be loosed on your fortress. These demons are very powerful and can wipe out even a mature, heavily defended fortress.
To start in a location which has adamantine (and the accompanying demon pits), you must start on a mountain tile (∆,∆,▲,▲,▲,▲,^,^,^) or volcano tile (^) in the Region map. The adamantine and pits will be located somewhere within the Local map of that region. It is more likely to be found on a Local map square which also shows as mountain.[Verify] The adamantine will occupy only one Local square, though the demon pits may extend beyond it. Finding it can be very difficult without cheating.
Note that there was a "too deep" forced game ending in previous versions of Dwarf Fortress v0.23.130.23a and earlier based on how much adamantine you had mined out, but this is no longer true in the current version.
Adamantine strands are extracted from raw adamantine at a Craftsdwarf's workshop. The Strand Extraction labor must be enabled for a dwarf to perform the extraction. Adamantine strands are worth 1800 monies each, while the raw adamantine is worth 750.
Adamantine is so valuable that a special message pops up when you discover a vein of it.

Adamantine is the cyan-colored ore, and is formed of clumps of razor-sharp strands that must be carefully extracted from the stone. The adamantine metal itself is considered 'the king of metals', light as a feather, hard as diamond and capable of being sharpened to a near-atomic edge.
Processing adamantine requires separate labors, Adamantine Extraction and Adamantine Working, to be enabled under a dwarf's p-l menu. Like craftsworking, adamantine processing is actually made up of a variety of skills:
- "Adamantine Extractor", which is gained from processing raw adamantine into adamantine strands at a Craftsdwarf's workshop.
- "Adamantine Smelter", which is gained from smelting adamantine strands into adamantine wafers at a Magma smelter. (A normal Smelter won't work.)
- "Adamantine Weaver", which is gained from weaving adamantine strands into adamantine cloth at a Loom.
- "Adamantine Worker", which is gained from forging things from adamantine wafers at a Metalsmith's forge (only clothes require a Magma forge).
Adamantine can be used to build any item you could build out of any other material (excluding, oddly, beds), including furniture, bins, mechanisms, shirts, shoes, etc. None of these items can be decorated however.
Adamantine items are incredibly light; in addition, every dwarf loves adamantine items. Forging the actual item is very fast, (even if making the wafers and hauling them to the workshop takes weeks) and doesn't require fuel.
Adamantine strands are worth 1800 monies each.
Adamantine cloth is worth 2100 monies each. You need three for a shirt, two for shoes, four for pants.
Adamantine wafers are worth 1500 monies and take much longer than bars of other metals to make. A battle axe needs four wafers, and a set of plate mail needs nine. A full set of plate mail, boots, gauntlets, greaves and helm takes 21 wafers.
