Wikipedia article

This article is about an older version of DF.

Bloodstones are unremarkable low-value gems found as small clusters in sedimentary layers. Contrary to what its name implies, bloodstone is green instead of red. In the real world, bloodstone (also known as heliotrope) is a form of chalcedony, named for the inclusions of red iron oxide that resemble spots of blood.

Don't believe everything you read, and if you miss some of the references, don't worry. It was inevitable.

A common gag gift for dwarven fathers is a small (bloodstone blood Barrel (pine)) for their office desk. They like it when visitors read the label and groan.
