Miners will '''mine out from each other's feet''' if you let them. This is a bug. Currently the best way to prevent this from happening is to turn off the mining [[labor]] off all dwarves but one. Push {{k|v}} near a miner to view the dwarf, then push {{k|p}} to bring up Preferences. Next push {{k|l}} to bring up the labor screen. Push enter to deselect mining. It will be white when enabled and grey when disabled. Or, you can simply busy your miners with other tasks while leaving one free.

Another problem with channeling is that miners have no problem channeling themselves into a corner. If you wanted to dig out an area that looked like this (where the hashes are solid rock and the hyphens are the places you wanted to channel):

You would either have to tell the miner to dig the back row and wait for him to do it, then tell him to dig out the middle row, and then next the far left square, then the middle square, and lastly the far right square, like so:

This article is about an older version of DF.

This issue has been fixed in version v0.27.169.33g. If for some reason you still need it, the guide is below.

As of version v0.27.169.33g, it is possible that the reverse problem will happen if you have more than one dwarf digging a channel in a closed room - that is, that channels may be dug around a dwarf, leaving him trapped on a single tile hovering on the side of a room. The techniques below will still prevent this from happening.

Dwarves always begin with the northwest most tile and work their way south until all designations in that column are complete.

The simplest way to prevent this from happening is to turn off the mining of all dwarves save one. Here are some other, less restrictive solutions:

Overseer[edit]

Designate channels in single columns. Leave the miners room to escape. This is also a good way to prevent your miners from being isolated.

Ramps[edit]

The total number of tasks required to complete this method is higher than the above one, but allows your dwarves to safely channel without you keeping tabs on them. Create stairs leading to the lower level at the entrance, designate ramps on the lower level, use the z-designate to remove those ramps, and finally channel the stairway on the original level.
