Miners will '''mine out from each other's feet''' if you let them. This is a bug. Currently the best way to prevent this from happening is to turn off the mining [[labor]] off all dwarves but one. Push {{k|v}} near a miner to view the dwarf, then push {{k|p}} to bring up Preferences. Next push {{k|l}} to bring up the labor screen. Push enter to deselect mining. It will be white when enabled and grey when disabled. Or, you can simply busy your miners with other tasks while leaving one free.

Another way of dealing with it is to keep a close eye on your miners, and if one starts to mine out another's feet then quickly cancel the channel designation.

This method takes more steps, but allows your dwarves to safely channel without you keeping tabs on them: create stairs leading to the lower level at the entrance, designate ramps on the lower level, use the z-designate to remove those ramps, and finally channel the stairway on the original level.

Another problem with channeling is that miners have no problem channeling themselves into a corner. If you wanted to dig out an area that looked like this (where the hashes are solid rock and the hyphens are the places you wanted to channel):

Miners will channel underneath another miner if you let them. This bug is preventable, once you understand how digging works: miners always begin with the northwest most tile and work their way south until all designations in that column are complete.

Solutions

The simplest way to prevent this from happening is to turn off the mining off all dwarves but one. Here are some other, less restrictive methods:

Overseer

Designate channels in single columns. Leave the miners room to escape.
