This article is about an older version of DF.

Ropes are created at the clothier's shop with one cloth, using the clothier skill and are stored in finished goods stockpiles. They are used in the construction of traction benches, wells, and restraints (b + v). Ropes are listed under the 'chains' heading in the z-stocks menu.

Taking a rope (or a cloth) with you at embark lets you construct a well more quickly.
