Verifications[edit]
Child labor stress[edit]
Not actually got anything definitive to report, but thought I may as well share that I looked through the chat history for this page on other versions and couldn't see this confirmed anywhere, and that the stress page doesn't seem to clear this up either. Just leaving a note to save time for anyone else looking into this. –Alpacalypse (talk) 14:05, 12 October 2026 (UTC)
DFHack finds[edit]
I tried making various creatures pregnant using custom DFHack scripts and the results were mostly satisfactionary, the whole overview is below:
Basic requirements[edit]
A creature has several data fields related to pregnancy (visible using gui/gm-editor). First, the pregnancy_timer is how long (in ticks) it takes until the pregnancy is complete - setting it to 1 when the creature is already pregnant will guarantee birth immediately. The creature needs also to have valid pregnancy_genes and pregnancy_caste - if they are not set correctly, either the pregnancy will do nothing or the game will crash. You can copy code from the catsplosion script to generate those. Next, pregnancy_spouse is not required - if not set, the father will be unknown (The identity of <his/her> father has been lost to time.). The mother also needs to be biologically female, otherwise the pregnancy will do nothing. The data field which determines that is sex, it has to be set to she for the pregnancy to work - the actual gender of the caste in the raws (set with [MALE], [FEMALE], or [NO_GENDER]) is ignored. Lastly, setting the pregnancy correctly on an egg-laying caste will do nothing - in such case, the pregnancy data only determines whether the eggs will be fertilized.
Genderswap tests[edit]
The gender has to be set to female only at the time of giving birth, and as said before the gender of the caste itself is ignored - you can have a female bull give birth, or even a forgotten beast set to be female this way. The male of an egg-laying creature can also be made to give (live) birth this way, since they are not the one laying eggs directly.
In relationships, the "mother" will be called by their current gender, whatever it is at the time - Mother, Father, or even Parent if currently genderless (which is not possible without hacking like so, by the way).
