After the bodies start falling, and sometimes even before, citizens will run like madmen right into the middle of a combat situation. We'd like to think of it as natural selection, but unfortunately all dwarves are just that stupid. The simplest way to deal with this problem is to confine your civilians to a burrow using a civilian alert.
