This article is about an older version of DF. |
Native platinum is the only ore of platinum, one of the most valuable metals available (equal in value to aluminum). Its high material value makes it a convenient material for high value rooms for nobles. Especially so, since mining out a platinum deposit still leaves a valuable platinum floor, ready for smoothing and engraving.
Native platinum can occur in veins inside bodies of magnetite and as small cluster within chromite. The veins from magnetite specifically can extend far outside the magnetite they originate from and the vein may even be interrupted at the magnetite cluster border.
When mined, chunks of native platinum are called platinum nuggets.
Bugs[edit]
Due to an error in the raw parsing code, the game attempts to generate native platinum as veins within chromite and as small clusters within olivine. This can be fixed by editing the ENVIRONMENT_SPEC tokens in the raws and reversing the order of the stone names. (Bug:1429)
In Real Life[edit]
Native platinum is technically not an ore; it's simply chunks of mostly pure metallic platinum. As platinum is an extremely unreactive metal, even less reactive than gold, this is by far the most common form in which platinum is found in nature.
