This article is about an older version of DF.

Grass is a naturally occurring map tile found across the surface of the world - nearly all land biomes can support grass, with the exclusion of mountains, glaciers, tundras, badlands, rocky wastelands, and sand deserts. Living grass is normally dark green and light green, though during dry seasons it turns yellow, and when dead (most frequently in evil regions) it turns brown.

Grass grows on top of all soil and sand floors, ramps, and stairs exposed to sunlight; it does not grow underground. Grass grows fairly quickly and allows shrubs and saplings to grow there (except in tundras and deserts, where plants can grow directly on bare soil). Creatures walking on grass have a chance (determined by their [GRASSTRAMPLE] value) of eroding the grass away, leaving nothing but the underlying soil or sand.

When exposed to especially high temperatures, grass can also catch fire, rapidly spreading and leaving behind ashes which will gradually disappear over time.
