Magnetite ore can be smelted at a smelter by a dwarf with the furnace operating labor activated to produce iron bars. It is, for all metalsmithing purposes, identical to hematite and limonite.
Magnetite is one of only 3 types of stones that can contain native platinum. It is also the only metal ore to occur as large clusters (~750 pieces on average). Because of its high material value compared to other types of stone that occur in large quantities (and the fact that you're probably going to want to mine it out anyways), magnetite clusters make excellent sites for high-value rooms.
