Dwarf fortress has various settings that can affect the game experience in various ways. Including adjustments to the game presentation and feel, like changing screen size, or enabling Tilesets. Other options that would improve framerate by deactivating features are contained in d_init.txt
These can be changed via the settings menu. You can reach it from the main menu or ingame menu by pressing the Settings button and switching to the keybindings tab. Or changed manually by editing the init.txt

Game settings are stored in <Dwarf Fortress>/prefs/init.txt
. Updates to settings from within the game translate to and are stored in this file, meaning you can manually edit settings with a text editor if required.
If the player choose to restore defaults the game uses <Dwarf Fortress>/data/init/init_default.txt
