Surroundings affect the types of plant life and wild animals which will appear in play. It is possible to start a fortress that overlaps two or three alignment types (good, evil, savage, and calm). Keep in mind this is totally awesome.

Good
- Animals: mountain gnome, satyr, unicorn
- Plants: sun berry, valley herb
- Vermin: fluffy wambler, fairy, pixie
Evil
- Animals: ogre, dark gnome, beak dog, foul blendec, grimeling, werewolf, harpy
- Plants: silver barb, kobold bulb
- Vermin: demon rat, blood gnat, knuckle worm, phantom spider
Savage
- Animals: giant eagle, giant cheetah, giant leopard, giant jaguar, giant tiger, giant lion
- Plants: whip vine
- Vermin: two-legged rhino lizard, moghopper, fox squirrel, acorn fly
