This article is about an older version of DF.

The alchemist skill is a holdover from very old versions of Dwarf Fortress - it was once used for making soap before the soaper skill was introduced in its place, but it has remained in the current version. The alchemy labor was removed by default in version 0.28.181.39a and does not appear unless the raws for your civilization contain the token [PERMITTED_JOB:ALCHEMIST].

Bugs[edit]

Dwarves whose highest skill is Alchemist should gain the "Alchemist" job title and profession (and appear purple along with the other Administrators), but due to a bug the Alchemist skill is not considered to be a valid civilian skill, causing them to potentially be Peasants instead. The following patch for version 0.28.181.40d for Windows fixes this:
