This article is about an older version of DF.

The purring maggot is currently the only creature that can be milked. You cannot embark with purring maggots. Dwarven cheese (made from dwarven milk, which is milked from purring maggots) is currently the most valuable food (100 per cheese) with the exception of butchered megabeasts.

Purring maggots can be caught in animal traps placed over the chasm with meat or fish for bait. They aren't visible before they are caught.

Each maggot can be milked about once per month, and up to 100 units of milk can be stored in a single barrel. Beware, though, that making a full barrel into cheese will produce 100 pieces of cheese which need to be individually hauled to a stockpile before they rot. On the other hand, allowing such a milk barrel to be cooked will yield an enormous stack of prepared meals with a ludicrously high value (assuming you've applied the necessary patch).

Alternatively, they can be dissected at a butcher's shop to yield a vial of 5 dwarven milk (which can be made into a stack of 5 cheese) and 1 piece of purring maggot meat.

Tamed maggots cannot be milked at all. The following patch for version 0.23.130.23a makes it possible to milk both tame and wild purring maggots:
