A quern is used to grind up certain plants to make flour, sugar and dye. Unlike a millstone, it does not require a power source, using dwarven labor instead. That said, it is slower to produce the milled product unless the miller is moderately strong.

Milling produces seeds from the plants.

Before you can build the quern workshop, you must first construct a quern ( an item of furniture) at a Mason's workshop with q-a-q.

It can be difficult to prevent or ensure the milling of certain plants, as the game provides no menu for that. Generally the miller will pick the closest plant, with the usual, occasionally surprising, definition of closest. Custom stockpiles close to the quern and/or the forbidding of certain plants are two possible ways. Both need careful micro-management.
