v53.11 · v0.47.05 This article is about the current version of DF.Note that some content may still need to be updated. |
The bowyer's workshop is a Tier 1 workshop used solely to make crossbows (and any other modded ranged weapons) out of wood or bone; metal crossbows are made at a metalsmith's forge (or magma forge), and ammo is made elsewhere. It requires any building material to construct, and must be built by a dwarf with the crossbow-making labor enabled.
Note that many fortresses will never build a bowyer's shop, or will do so only upon arrival and then tear it down again. While wooden or bone crossbows are identical to metal ones for purposes of ranged combat (same accuracy, same range, etc), if (read "when") a marksdwarf's target(s) rush up and force melee combat, a lightweight wooden/bone crossbow is significantly inferior to any metal crossbow. So, the only advantages of wood/bone crossbows are 1) that they are slightly lighter in weight, and 2) that a fortress doesn't need a metal industry up and running to produce them, just an axe and a tree to cut down.

Common Uses[edit]
Notes[edit]
- The name of this workshop will change if your fortress's primary race provides a custom value for the
[PROFESSION_NAME:BOWYER]token. - Use of a crossbow also requires bolts, which are made in a craftsdwarf's workshop or forge, and a quiver, made in a leather works.
- If you're using a mod which allows dwarves to make and use bows and/or blowguns (or any other ranged weapons), they will automatically show up here.
