Proposed cleanup of release info[edit]

I suggest streamlining release info as follows:

Any objections? OddballJoe (talk) 07:11, 4 January 2023 (UTC)

For posterity: About also has a version history that needs updating or removal. —OddballJoe (talk) 21:15, 9 February 2023 (UTC)

iirc there is another places where there is out of date version history. I think that we should consolidate all this into one page, and that page should be 'Release information'. I also think that we should have links here to older versions. Not sure about the other specifics.--Jan (talk) 00:25, 5 January 2023 (UTC)

The only other place I've found talking about versions was Dwarf Fortress#History, and I think the top half of History of Dwarf Fortress can be merged into that. I'm also thinking that it could be nice to include top few lines of the release history on the main page, to show off what's new, if there's an easy technical solution. Sorry took me a while to find it again. It is save compatibility#breakages, which isn't updated regularly and is identical in function to what asterisk are used for on this page. So if release information is consolidated here, it can be used instead of that section. --Jan (talk) 01:17, 6 January 2023 (UTC)
I have added the contents of History of Dwarf Fortress#Release_History here to get things started.
I added table, if it doesn't work for you simply revert. Also I noticed that the Russian wiki added version\namespace chooser for its quick link bar, we could use that as well. --Jan (talk) 19:27, 6 January 2023 (UTC)

I've finished some of this cleanup. I like the suggestion to use the Russian wiki's design. Proposed additional changes:

  • Replace {{Release notes}} with User:OddballJoe/Sandbox/VersionTemplate, which add links to all the major versions at the top like the Russian wiki.
  • Remove the {{av}} template from all [ns]:Release information pages.
  • (tentative) move all [ns]:Release information pages older than 0.47 to [ns]:Release information/[version].01 pages; the page notes are for just one specific release, not the whole namespace.
  • (tentative) delete DF2014:Release information, get rid of the "x notes" link in the release lists.
  • (tentative) move this page to "Version History" to be more descriptive and decouple it from the [ns]:Release information/[version] pages.

I mildly disagree with (3) and (4) on the basis that subpages generally benefit from having a parent page for navigation. e.g. I think if we have DF2014:Release information/0.44.01, we should have DF2014:Release information. —Lethosor (talk) 23:35, 18 January 2023 (UTC)
All the subpages would have their navigation needs met via the release notes template, but we could leave some boilerplate on the parent page (e.g. just the navigation template). Or how about redirecting them to the appropriate section of this page? E.g. Release information#Dwarf_Fortress_v0.40 --OddballJoe (talk) 23:50, 18 January 2023 (UTC)
