If your game is running slowly, there are a few easy tricks that an be applied.


[edit] In-Game

When embarking, use u, h, k, and m to re-size the local area. Smaller equals faster.


[edit] Out of Game

Hit Ctrl+Shift+Esc. This should bring up the Task Manager. From there, go to Processes, find DwarfFortress.exe, right click it, go to Set Priority, and set it to either "High" or "Realtime"
