Animal trainers train Template:Ls at the Template:L to be Template:Ls or Template:Ls. They also tame certain captured wild Template:L and Template:L, though exotic Template:L (such as Template:Ls) can only be tamed once you have a Template:L.

Higher skill only allows faster training of animals.

Training an animal requires a small amount of Template:L, which is consumed by the animal. Any Template:Ls, Template:Ls or Template:Ls are left in the animal's Template:L, if it was in one. Since the cage isn't empty, it can't be used to load a cage Template:L. Currently, the only way to clean items out a cage is to Template:L them. To do so, press k, move over to the cage with refuse in it, select it, hit Enter, select a refuse object, press Enter and d. Do not press d while in the cage but not the refuse – such will label the whole cage for dumping. Once the animal is trained, they will tend to follow whomever trained them around until assigned to another person, adopted, or some such other task.

If the tame task is put on repeat, your animal trainer will continue to 'tame' caged animals of that type -- including already tame ones once there are no wild ones. The task does not cancel automatically after there are no untamed animals left. The result is a cage filled with many seeds, bones, and shells.

Currently the food for taming is picked somewhat randomly and herbivores may be tamed with Template:L or other Template:L.

Additionally, only dwarves with Animal Training labor enabled will transfer hostile creatures between cages.
