A brook is a small river that has floor tiles above it. Essentially, it flows through a small tunnel underground. The RP cause of this is that there is no good way to represent a shallow brook, which can easily be walked across, in DF. Those floor tiles are normal floor tiles – you can make a brook muddy and farm on top of it.

Water wheels will not function if placed directly on a brook. In order to get water wheels to work, you must dig a channel through the surface of the brook, which removes the floor tiles, making that part a normal river. Keep in mind that you do not need to dig a channel in order to fish: the brook is treated as normal water in this case. After daming the brook you can mine out the brook tile to produce one stone. This can provide an important source of stone in maps which contain aquifers with the brook itself providing the motive force for draining the aquifer, and the stone supplying the much needed mechanisms.
