Dwarves with the cleaning labor enabled (default) will remove various contaminants from the floor after battles, as well as the debris that accumulates around archery targets. Interestingly, dwarves will also remove mud from tiles designated for smoothing (but not yet smoothed, in case your engravers are busy).
