Wikipedia article

This article is about an older version of DF.

Trolls are creatures that are intended to be employed by goblins and used in sieges to destroy doors and other buildings. They have a pale blue blood which can stain masonry walls rather oddly when combined with their red-blooded masters.

They are intended to be selected based on having [EVIL], not having [CAN_LEARN], having a [SIZE] greater than one (to exclude vermin), and having exclusively subterranean biomes. However, the token [SLOW_LEARNER] (added in version 0.28.181.39a) automatically gives them [CAN_LEARN] as well, so they end up getting disqualified.

Through modding, players can create their own subterranean servants who will accompany goblins in battle by giving their race these tokens.

Although they cannot be butchered without modifying the game, their meat and skulls (as totems) are unusually valuable. In an unmodified game you can get their bones and skulls by leaving their corpses to rot away.
