v50.14 · v0.47.05 This article is about the current version of DF.Note that some content may still need to be updated. |
Silver is a mid-value metal which is useful for weapons, ammunition, furniture, decorations, and other objects.
Properties
Silver has the highest density of all the weapon-grade metals; its additional weight enhances the performance of bludgeoning weapons such as maces, mauls, and war hammers. However, a low shear strength means silver-made edged weapons such as spears or swords are quite terrible compared to other weapons-grade metals.
In tests in the Object Testing Arena, silver War hammers were found to be the deadliest weapon against humanoids. Silver crossbows can also be a good choice, because the ranged damage of the crossbow doesn't depend on the material the crossbow is made of, but the extra density of silver will help a little bit if the fight comes down to bashing opponents using the crossbow.
While silver swords were said to be the only blades capable of slaying werewolves in legends, steel usually works much better for that purpose in Dwarf Fortress, unless by chance the werebeast you're fighting happens to be vulnerable to silver.
Silver may be combined with other metals in a magma smelter or smelter to produce the following alloys:
- Billon = Silver + Copper
- Electrum = Silver + Gold
- Black bronze = Silver + Gold + 2x Copper †
- Sterling silver = 3x Silver + Copper †
† these reactions may only be performed with bars (not ores)
Despite its name, Nickel silver does not contain any silver.
