Wagons are special creatures used by caravans. Humans will send wagons with their caravans, which have a much greater capacity for bringing foreign imports and accepting dwarven exports. Unfortunately, wagons require a road leading from the edge of the map to your trade depot. If no such road exists (or if you have not built a depot at all), they will bypass your site and you will only be able to trade for what is available on the pack animals.
See road for more information on what needs to be done to allow wagons to reach your depot.
