The metalsmith skill is used to make furniture, buckets, bins, blocks, cages, and anvils at a metalsmith's forge. (Despite their being under the "furniture" menu of a forge, chains are made by metal crafters, and animal traps are made by trappers).
The labor that corresponds to the metalsmith skill is called blacksmithing. A dwarf who's highest skill is metalsmithing will have the metalsmith profession.
Metalsmith is also the name of the category of skills that all relate to the processing of ore into metal goods.
An adult dwarf whose best skill is in this category, and who has accumulated relatively equal ranks in other metalsmithing skills (exactly how much is not clear) will also be known as a Metalsmith. Otherwise the dwarf will be known by his or her highest skill.
