Seats are a standard feature in [[dining room]]s -- each [[table]] should have an available adjacent seat to allow dwarves to sit while they eat at that table - if a dwarf is forced to eat standing up, or without a table, a bad [[thought]] will result. Seats and tables are not automatically paired, so an arrangement that forces 1 seat:1 table is recommended, so a dwarf sitting at one seat does not take the only available table to another seat.

Seats, like [[table]]s, are an obvious part of [[dining room]]s -- Dining at a seat in a high quality dining hall will give an (additional) happy [[thought]]. If a dwarf wants to eat he will look for a free seat. If he doesn't find one he will have an unhappy thought. If he finds a seat but no free table next to it, he will also have an unhappy thought. A throne or chair is a piece of furniture that dwarves use in their daily routines once built as a seat (the generic term). A throne can be made from stone at a mason's workshop with masonry, metal at a forge with blacksmithing, glass at a glass furnace with glassmaking, or from wood at a carpenter's workshop by a dwarf with the carpentry labor (where it's listed as a "chair"). The material has no effect on its functionality; all thrones work the same. Note that for an equal skill level, wood chairs are produced faster than rock thrones[Verify], though different materials have different final base value multipliers.

The build menu option chair will allow you to place any throne/chair as a "seat", but only indoors.

Seats, like tables, are an obvious part of dining rooms -- Dining at a seat in a high quality dining hall will give an (additional) happy thought. If a dwarf wants to eat he will look for a free seat. If he doesn't find one he will have an unhappy thought. If he finds a seat but no free table next to it, he will also have an unhappy thought. Dwarves also don't like to share tables, getting an unhappy thought if the table in front of them is currently being used by someone else. Having enough seats and tables and placing them in an unambiguous 1:1 pattern avoids these bad thoughts.

Seats are also used to create offices (and throne rooms, essentially the same thing) for nobles.
