This article is about an older version of DF. |
- A vile force of darkness has arrived!
Goblins view dwarves as a scourge on the world and vice versa. When a fortress becomes large enough to attract their attention (after the acquisition of a mayor or a trade minister), nearby goblin civilizations will send siege after siege in an effort to stamp it out. Various goblin childsnatchers will also attempt to take stray dwarven children home to fatten them up. The biggest threat to your fortress (after demons and poor planning) is a goblin siege.
A classic goblin tactic is to rush the front gate. This is often suicidal but can startle the fortress ruler into triggering untested defensive systems, pulling levers in a panic and flooding his/her entire fortress with magma, thus ending the dwarf problem.
Goblin sieges may be accompanied by groups of trolls if the mountains near their dark fortresses are inhabited by them. With modding, any creature which resides in the cave river or chasm, is [EVIL], and lacks [CAN_LEARN] is eligible to become a siege minion.
Why we love goblins
Siege aftermath. 30 dead, drowned, or trapped goblins will get you:
- Heaps of experience for your surviving military
- 30 sets of narrow clothing to sell to the human caravans
- 30 sets of iron weapons, most of them wieldable by dwarves, and ammo
- 30 sets of narrow iron armor, meltable at the smelter (with bookkeeper)
- 30 stacks of goblin bone bolts for training your marksdwarves (with Craftsdwarf's workshop)
This has led some to describe such sieges as goblin christmas.
Goblins in Adventure Mode
Many a goblin child has been hushed quiet by the tales of the dwarven stranglers that creep into the rooms of bad little goblin boys and girls.
You cannot play as a goblin in adventure mode (unless you mod it in). Goblins live in "dark fortresses" and will attack you on sight. They give a lot of combat experience if you can kill all of them. If you're not experienced though, just one goblin soldier is enough to kill you.
