A kitchen is operated by a dwarf with the Template:L Template:L enabled. It is used to cook meals and render fat from Template:L animals into Template:L. Cooking meals will drastically increase the food's value, and you lose nothing in the process. If you cook 5 plump helmets, you will receive 5 meals and the seeds as well.

Bugs

There is currently a bug where a liquid only meal can't actually exist. When a dwarf attempts to make a meal with only liquid items, the job does not complete, and the liquid ingredients end up cluttering the workshop in a puddle. In essence, barrels of Template:L become just dwarven syrup, and cannot be removed from the workshop by any means once this has happened. The only solution to this is to deconstruct the workshop.
