This article is about an older version of DF. |
Weight is an item property, and is measured in units Γ, also known as urists.
Weight is used by the game to determine how fast someone or something should move, due to encumbrance effects and carry weight restrictions. Note that, for DF, weight and mass are currently indistinguishable because as it stands DF gravity is uniform both across the whole universe and from world to world and buoyancy isn't implemented.
Weight is displayed as a quantity associated with an item. Weight calculation is mostly straightforward - for most items it is constant, and for those that vary, the formula is fairly straightforward.
Weight Calculation
All items have a "default" weight which can be observed when the item is made of stone. Items made of wood, bone, ivory, horn, coral, shell, leather, or plant fiber cloth weigh 1/2 as much, and items made of silk or adamantine weigh 1/8 as much.
Items also have a "bulk" which does not depend on the material and is used to determine clutter as well as how many items can fit into a container.
