The monarch is the highest level Template:L. Rather than being promoted from within, like the baron, count, and duke, the monarch arrives as an immigrant from the previous capital. Males are known as "king" and females are known as "queen". They may arrive with an opposite gendered "king consort" or "queen consort", as well as an entourage that can include elite military dwarves and ordinary workers. Unlike previous versions, the monarch will no longer come upon the discovery of Template:L. [Verify]

You may check how close you are to meeting the requirements for a monarch's arrival by pressing n c after you have a population of at least 140. (This option does not appear on the Noble screen at first.)

Once the monarch arrives, your fortress becomes the capital of your civilization. Because of this, you will no longer receive visits from a dwarven Template:L, nor can you give goods to dwarf caravans as offerings.

The monarch arrives at the at the same time within a season an immigration wave does, but have an entirely separate entourage that can spawn from a different part of the map.
