- Not to be confused with the Metalsmith category profession.
The metalsmith skill is used to make furniture, buckets, bins, blocks, cages, and anvils at a metalsmith's forge.
The labor that corresponds to the metalsmith skill is called blacksmithing. A dwarf whose highest skill is "metalsmith" will have the Blacksmith profession.*
Note: Despite both being under the "furniture" menu of a forge, chains are made by metal crafters, and animal traps are made by trappers).
- * Note: Technically (aka outside DF), a "blacksmith" only forges items from iron, similar to a goldsmith or silversmith, etc. In DF, no such differentiation exists re metals used, so the skill "metalsmithing" covers all metals. Confusingly, however, "Metalsmith" is also the professional title given for the whole class of metalworking skills, so a dwarf who is both a Master Furnace Operator + Weaponsmith may gain a professional label of "Metalsmith", despite having no "metalsmithing" (blacksmithing) skill at all.
Unfortunately, this often leads to some confusion between the skill metalsmith, here, and the profession by the same name. So, in DF, "Blacksmith" refers to the labor of non-specific smithing of any/all metals, and the associated skill information is discussed in the article you are now reading.
Sorry, we just work here. (~wiki editors~)

- Buildings which are built using material-dependent labors (e.g. a trade depot) may require "any metalsmithing skill," but will only check and raise Metalsmithing, not any other qualifying skill (e.g. weaponsmithing). The quality of any such buildings is based off this skill alone. Bug:4899
