This article is about the current version of DF.
Note that some content may still need to be updated.

Not to be confused with the Metalsmith category profession.

The blacksmith skill is used to make furniture, buckets, bins, blocks, cages, and anvils at a metalsmith's forge.

The labor that corresponds to the metalsmith skill is called blacksmithing. A dwarf whose highest skill is "metalsmith" will have the Blacksmith profession. Confusingly, "metalsmith" is also the professional title given for the whole class of metalworking skills, so an equally skillful furnace operator and weaponsmith may gain a professional label of "metalsmith", despite having no "metalsmithing" (blacksmithing) skill at all.

Despite both being under the "furniture" menu of a forge, chains are made by metal crafters, and animal traps are made by trappers.

If only he knew how many goblin heads would be sliced with that thing.

Bugs

  • Buildings which are built using material-dependent labors (e.g. a trade depot) may require "any metalsmithing skill," but will only check and raise Metalsmithing, not any other qualifying skill (e.g. weaponsmithing). The quality of any such buildings is based off this skill alone. Bug:4899
