Wikipedia article

This article is about an older version of DF.
A small forest bird known for the distinctive flaps of skin hanging from its face. It is prized for its meat.

hens will lay between 10 and 14 eggs and require a nest box to lay the eggs in. A nest box is created at a craftsdwarf's workshop or metalsmith's forge and can be placed with the [B]uild menu using [N]. A nest box will be claimed by one hen and it will regularly lay eggs. A gobbler is required to fertilize the eggs however fertilization is not guaranteed. Once hatched chicks will grow into adults in 1 year.

for a food source turkeys are a better option then chickens. Turkeys have larger bodies and there for provide more when butchered. Turkeys will also produce a higher number of eggs on average then chickens
